Interview with THIRD SOVEREIGN
by Hombre Rancio
Hello friends, today I have the pleasure to talk to Third Sovereign, a Death Metal Band from India, very raw stuff.
Hi guys, let’s talk a little about the beginnings of the band. How was Third Sovereign created?
The band had it’s earlier roots from a band called Carpathia (Aizawl, Mizoram, India) where Reuben and Jonah were playing a lot with each other. Now, this led to a series of regular practice sessions where both of them were working on songs (both covers and originals). Jonah was playing the guitar in these practice sessions till a time came when they decided to induct Jason as a stable guitar player and soon, with that came the induction of Mala and there….You had the first proper line-up of Third Sovereign which was Mala (vocals), Jason (guitars), Jonah (bass) and Reuben (drums). The name cropped up from a D.C. comic book hero called “Sovereign 7”.
What differences are in between your first album “Destined to Suffe “ and your new work “Perversion Swallowing Sanity”?
Well, the production has definitely taken leaps and bounds on this one, modern yet keeping our sound intact! We would like to thank Aming for the production who is our studio engineer. We are very lucky to have our own studio “Vortex” which is situated in Aizawl, Mizoram, India. Apart from that, the songs have become faster, meaner and more challenging!!
“Perversion Swallowing Sanity” is your new album, what are we going to find in it?
Pure, Unadulterated and Honest “in your face” Death Metal that will kick your balls!!
I like very much your music. The band mixed Death with Thrash, technical riffs, power thrash riffs, Death, Old school, its fucking amazing. What do you think?
Really appreciate it! We have just tried to replicate our sound with honesty and with self-contentment because for us it is our self-contentment that comes first!!
How was the design and creation process of the album?
The creative process for the record was based on the jam sessions in the studio. Most of the songs were written and composed after we released “Destined to Suffer” which would be the latter part of 2007 and early 2008. But since our studio, which was based in Delhi, at that time got burnt, the band suffered great loss and all our work took a backseat. In 2012, the band shifted base to it’s hometown Aizawl and started building it’s own studio “Vortex” which was complete by early 2013. We began tracking in mid August of 2013 and wrapped up the whole process by September 2015. We took our time on this as we wanted everything to be perfect (for us) and so we were very precise even with the smallest details as this was coming after a long time and we didn’t want any loose ends!
In your opinion, which are the stronger points of the band?
We have always seen through rough times and have evolved farther with the experiences. We have stuck to our guns always and never gave in to anything or anyone. We are what we are and we do what we do which embarks on our musical representation.
What are your musical influences?
To be honest at this stage, there’s not much of influences left. It’s mostly what we see at times which makes us write our music. But the foundations have always been laid by bands we grew up listening to like early Sepultura (Max Cavalera era), Death, Carcass, Cannibal Corpse to name a few.
My favourite song is Spawned with Guilt, what is yours?
Sarcophaga, Devolution of Mortality, Holocaust of Preachings and Dark Black are a few which we really enjoy and have fun playing live.
What themes do you touch in your lyrics?
A lot of the ideas and concepts comes from our experiences that we have gone through or experienced on a personal basis. We don’t deal with gore or blasphemy like a lot of extreme metal bands deal with. (That’s not us and I think it’s boring for us!) Our ideologies are more inclined towards the philosophies of life, old folk legendary tales reflected on the intro “Sakei Ai Hla”, biological degradation on “Devolution of Mortality” and so on!
How do you see the current scene of the Death metal in your country?
There is a gradual rise in the bands playing Death metal and it’s slowly coming to the fore which is good!
How can the fan get your album?
What are your future plans?
Playing the new record to the mass as much as possible! We also have a couple of things lined up but only time will tell!!
Thank you very much and congratulations for your great work. If you wish to add something, go ahead…
Gracias Hugo for having us on board and appreciating our work! Cheers to everyone in Spain, India and worldwide who have lend their ears to the record and for your support! Without you guys we are nothing! A big shout goes out to Kunal Choksi from our label Transcending Obscurity!! The quest continues…Stay sick perverts!!
